Are you ready? It seems like Christmas comes faster every year! All the lights, the decorations, the food… We have so much to prepare for sometimes we get lost preparing and forget to stop and enjoy the season. If you are hosting your first Christmas and feeling a little on edge, we’ve got 5 great tips for conquering this Christmas!
We read somewhere that baking in advance and freezing in advance is a great way to have one less thing on your list during Christmas. Now that we think of it, this is actually a really great way to prepare. Not having to worry about so much Christmas baking would take a big weight off your shoulders while you cook a turkey and stir and serve what feels like a million dishes. Prepare the things that you can prepare, and help your self out early in the game.
Buy some of your gifts online.. or hit the shops early.
Can you get some gifts out of the way early? Online shopping means avoiding Christmas crowds; as well as having one less thing on your list during Christmas. If you have any gift ideas for the people you buy for, buy it now! When Christmas comes around and you get that “I’ve got to scramble and get my gifts together!” feeling, you’ll thank yourself. You’ll have half or even all your gifts already bought, maybe even wrapped. (pro tip: wrap your gifts as you buy them!) Talk about preparation.
Speaking of gifts, establish a budget.
Plan now and budget out exactly what you are going to spend. Not only on gifts, but on food if you’re hosting. Even on decorations. Planning what to spend and tracking it to make sure you stick to it, is a great way to avoid the remorse we feel when we realise we’ve once again spent way too much during the holidays. Be realistic with your budget, and also don’t forget to remind yourself that Christmas isn’t about how much you spend. Make it less about the gifts, and more about the time with your family.
Family staying over after a big Christmas dinner? Plan ahead and make sure you know who is staying over, if anyone. It’s one less last minute surprise and you can have the spare room all set up for them ahead of time. Now is the time to get your house in shape for visitors, so check and see if you need new sheets, new towels etc. Have your home ready for your overnight guests before you are scrambling the day before everyone comes over. You can rest easy knowing you have knocked yet another thing off the list before things get too hectic.
And lastly, decorate!
Last, but certainly not least, decorate! Get your family together and decorate the house. It will not only get you in the Christmas spirit but it will also feel nice to have your house Christmas ready early on, so that you aren’t scrambling to decorate the week before your guests arrive. You and your family can enjoy this activity together, and really get in the Christmas spirit.
